A Guide to Polarized Sunglasses

am Jan 08 2021
MOSCOT’s Complete Guide to Polarized Sunglasses! Here at MOSCOT, one of the most common questions we receive is ‘What’s the difference between polarized and non-polarized sunglasses?’ It’s a good question and one worth knowing the answer to, as polarized lenses typically come at a higher price point than non-polarized lenses.  That’s why we’ve put together this guide: to help you understand the differences between polarized and non-polarized sunglasses, the best uses for polarized sunglasses, and how to decide if polarized or non-polarized sunglasses are the right choice for you! You can also explore our complete selection of polarized sunglasses here to find your perfect set of sunnies! What are polarized sunglasses? All MOSCOT Sunglasses provide optimal protection against UV radiation (harmful rays from the sun). Remember that UV radiation exists year-round and that the color of the lens has no impact on UV radiation protection by the lens. Polarized lenses are fabricated in a unique way that is specifically designed to reduce glare from intense reflected light. As glare is caused from the sun reflecting off water, or a solid surface, polarized lenses are particularly beneficial while at the beach, lake, or around snow, or while participating in outdoor activities such as water sports, snow sports, or fishing. Non-polarized sunglasses, on the other hand, also block harmful UV rays from reaching the eyes. However, the lenses aren't treated the same as polarized lenses and do not help to reduce harsh glares. Non-polarized glasses are better suited for activities that require the use of LED screens, as polarized sunglasses make it difficult to see LED light. This is why most pilots use non-polarized sunglasses so that they can better see their various screens and instruments.  How do polarized sunglasses work? To understand how polarized sunglasses work, you first need to know a little about sunlight and glare. When sunlight reaches uneven surfaces, like the grass or sidewalk, it is scattered, so no glare occurs (this accounts for most of the sunlight that reaches our eyes and is known as vertical light). However, when sunlight hits a smooth, flat surface—like a body of water—it is reflected in a single direction, resulting in a harsh glare, also known as horizontal light. Polarized lenses are specially treated to absorb this horizontal light while still allowing other vertical light to pass through, reducing perceived glares.   A brief history of polarized sunglasses So, when were polarized sunglasses invented? Believe it or not, polarized sunglasses have existed for over 85 years! They were invented in 1936 by an inventor named Edwin H. Land. Land had previously patented the Polaroid filter, which filtered out horizontal light. He then applied that filter to sunglass lenses, thus creating the first pair of polarized sunglasses.  These original polarized sunglasses were first sold to the public in 1937. They were also extremely popular with pilots during World War II (when plane instruments were largely analog). Since then, polarized sunglasses have become increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts, especially those who like to fish and ski. The rest, as they say, is history! Best uses for polarized sunglasses As mentioned, polarized sunglasses are extremely popular in various outdoor activities, especially those involving water or snow. They can be quite beneficial in activities like: Fishing Boating Skiing Snowboarding Golfing Take fishing, for example. Polarized sunglasses reduce the glare from the surface of the water, allowing anglers to see any fish that might be swimming underneath.  Boating is another activity that is great for polarized sunglasses. The harsh glare of the sun off water can make it difficult (or even dangerous!) to operate a boat, especially at high speeds. Polarized glasses reduce that glare, allowing the driver to better see where they are going.  Similarly, when the sun reflects off the snow, it can make it hard to see while enjoying winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Polarized sunglasses reduce that glare, allowing skiers to see their way down the run better and look out for other obstacles and people on the mountain. Overall, polarized sunglasses are best suited for outdoor activities that are often hampered by harsh glares from the sun.  Are polarized sunglasses better? Polarized sunglasses aren’t necessarily better than non-polarized sunglasses; it all depends on what you are using the sunglasses for. If you’re just bopping around town and want a stylish way to protect your eyes, non-polarized sunglasses should do the trick just fine.  However, if you find yourself spending a lot of time doing water sports or winter mountain sports, a pair of polarized sunglasses could be super beneficial. Once you determine what you’ll be using your sunglasses for, you can decide whether polarized or non-polarized sunglasses are right for you.  How to choose polarized sunglasses  If you think polarized sunglasses are right for you, the next step is picking your perfect pair! You can explore our complete range of polarized sunglasses here, offered in a wide selection of our most popular frames and colors.  If you’re unsure of how you might look, many of our frames come with the ability to try them on virtually. Staying true to the heritage of handcrafted eyewear, MOSCOT has always been known for its iconic tortoise acetates! From Antique Tortoise to Classic Havana, MOSCOT tortoise tones cover it all! Take a look at the unique iterations we offer of this classic colorway while learning more about the history and heritage of tortoiseshell frames. SHOP TORTOISE TONES First popularized in the 1920s, original tortoiseshell glasses were made using real turtles and tortoises. Quickly banned in the 1970s to protect the animals from extinction, custom acetate took their place as a reproduction of the original tortoiseshell pattern. Often characterized by its fluid pattern and specks of contrasting color, tortoise tones feature unique details distinct to each frame in a rich, neutral tone that complements all complexions. Remaining firmly planted as a family-run legacy brand for over 100 years, MOSCOT has been framing New Yorkers with original styles, shapes, and colorways since our start in 1915. In keeping with the tradition of the tortoiseshell design, MOSCOT offers a wide range of Tortoise colorways from lighter shades like Vintage Tortoise with its distinct golden waves, to darker tones like the understated flecks of light in Dark Havana. BEHIND THE LENS

Zack Moscot, 5th Generation, was the first Moscot to join the family business as a formally trained product designer. Born and bred in NYC, Zack incorporates his family heritage and Lower East Side DNA in all his design details. Read on for a Behind the Lens design Q&A with Chief Design Officer Zack Moscot. Where do you find inspiration for new designs? A lot of times a design first starts in the Shop downstairs, where I am able to speak directly with our customers and get inspiration from the action on the streets of the Lower East Side. Listening to the types of styles, fit, and shapes the diverse customers who come in through our doors are looking for influence my designs and give me direction in creating a new collection. How do you begin your design process? Many of my designs start with historical inspiration from our family’s frame archives from decades past. I’ll start designing by hand with some pen and pencil and begin to gesture out the shapes and silhouettes of my new designs before I take anything to the computer. Sometimes it’s a soft curve or a rigid line that will make all the difference in a particular shape. Once I’ve narrowed down the hand drawing, my next step is taking the technical drawing onto the computer, where I will get more specific with the sizes and technical aspects of the drawing. I’ll also play with different renderings and colorways, so I can analyze how a particular frame will appear with different lens color combinations and frame colors. How do you choose the colorways that fit best with the new design? After the new frame shape is finalized, I’ll start to examine what types of colorways we want to introduce in the collection. Typically, I’ll start by picking out different types of tortoiseshells—at MOSCOT we’ve become known for our iconic tortoiseshell colorways over the decades. I also like to work with translucent acetates and always like to incorporate new transparent colors to a new collection. The possibilities are endless—but we like to stay true to our timeless colors, our Classiconic™ hues that we are known for. Can you share any details or styles in the new collection you are currently designing? I’ve designed a new frame inspired by our world renowned LEMTOSH, but it’s going to be a touch thicker in terms of its frontal gauge. I’ve analyzed what our current LEMTOSH looks like and how it feels, and I’ve made some adjustments to this design to give it its own unique personality. What is your favorite material to work with? I love designing with acetate because it gives me endless possibilities with shape and form. It’s also great to wear as it is comfortable and allows our opticians to adjust it properly to one’s face for a proper fit. What are some of your favorite styles from a design perspective? It’s hard to pick a favorite! But to name a few… The DREY is one of my favorite frames. It’s a classic P-3 shape with detailed filigree and a functional 180-degree clip-flip so that you can easily flip your sunglass up, or flip it down! Another personal favorite frame is The LAZER – one of my new fall designs this year. It’s really cool because it feels like a traditional aviator, however it is round and features an acetate sweat bar which exudes elements of sport and luxury. Shop The LAZER in Antique Gold / Matte Dark Brown The FRITZ is a really bold frame made with thin sheet acetate laminate so it looks thick from the front, but from the side its super thin and very comfortable. It features a beveled frame front that adds a lot of character! Lastly, I’m excited about the new colorway on The DUDEL that we launched recently. We incorporated Crystal acetate laminated on top of Black acetate so that you can bring attention to the metal intricacies on the temple. As a designer, how do you suggest someone find the perfect frame for their style? From a design and style perspective, different frames are key for different occasions. During the day you may like to wear a chunky acetate frame with a casual outfit, but for evening you might want to dress up your look with a more polished metal frame, for example, for added elegance. Ultimately, your frames are the first thing you put on in the morning, and the last thing you take off at night, so it’s so important to find something that fits your style and is unique to you. What is your go-to frame to wear? It’s key to have different frames for different functions! When I’m at work designing, I like to wear my LEMTOSH with my Blue Protect lenses for the computer to reduce eye strain, but on the weekends, I like to wear my ARTHUR Sunglasses which are lightweight and comfortable while walking down the street.   SHOP ICONS

Low Bridge Fit

What Does Low Bridge Fit Mean? Get your perfect fit! With over 100 years of optical expertise, we know not every frame fits the same way. MOSCOT offers low bridge fit frames so that you can find the right frame for your face. First things first, what exactly is a low bridge fit? Low bridge fit glasses are glasses designed for those with a lower nose bridge. They’re specially made to fit more comfortably on the face without slipping. So, pushing up your glasses will soon become a thing of the past! Our low bridge fit glasses come with additional support in the form of silicone or metal nose pads, so your glasses have even more grip. They’re available in the same great styles, and in fits to suit you! We know that one size frame does not fit all, just as one bridge does not fit all. With low bridge fit, we provide an extension of fit offerings so that you can find the right fit for your face. Bridge Fits At MOSCOT, we offer a number of different bridge fit options, including acetate, step-down, and metal. Classic Acetate Nose pads: Made from acetate Comfortable, classic fit Step-down Nose pads: Made from acetate Extended step-down design adds support to ensure the frame sits where it should without slipping down the nose Recommended for those drawn to the look of acetate nose pads, but with the added support for less prominent or narrow nose bridges Metal Nose pads: Made from metal and silicone Soft and flexible for maximum comfort Recommended for those needing additional support for less prominent nose bridges or desiring more grip with the addition of silicone nose pads What's different about low bridge glasses? Low bridge fit glasses are designed slightly differently from regular glasses, to offer increased grip and ensure your glasses don’t fall down your face. They feature larger nose pads with additional support, which rest on the side of the nose rather than directly on the slope of the nose. This means, if your nose bridge is lower, you don’t have to worry about your glasses falling. In terms of aesthetics, low bridge fit glasses offer the same style and visual appeal as regular eyeglasses – just with additional nose pads to ensure a better fit. What are the benefits of low bridge glasses? All faces are shaped differently, so glasses need to adapt to suit different features. This is precisely the case with low bridge glasses. Some of the key benefits of low bridge glasses are: No more slipping. Low bridge glasses are expertly designed to reduce movement and slipping, so you can say goodbye to your glasses falling down your nose or resting on your cheeks. Increased comfort. Regular glasses may feel uncomfortable if you have a lower nose bridge, and you may experience pinching on your nose or cheeks. With increased grip, low bridge glasses will stay put all day so that you can enjoy long-lasting comfort. How do I know if I need low bridge fit glasses? If you find yourself pushing up your glasses regularly, it may be worth checking out a pair of low bridge glasses. If your glasses tend to rest on your cheekbones when you talk or smile, low bridge glasses could also be an excellent option for you. You can carry out a simple test in the mirror to determine whether you have a low nose bridge and need low bridge fit glasses. If the slope of your nose is either level with or lower than your pupils, a low bridge fit will help keep your glasses in place. What style low bridge fit glasses are available? You should never have to compromise comfort for style, and with our range of fashionable low bridge fit glasses, you can choose from styles you love. At MOSCOT, our low bridge fit glasses are available in some of our most popular designs, including the LEMTOSH, MILTZEN, NEBB, and FRANKIE. Sun Care Tips with Dr. Harvey Moscot

am Jul 19 2020
Keep your eyes happy and healthy year-round with sun protection eyecare tips! Dr. Harvey Moscot weighs in. How do I protect my eyes from the sun on bright summer days? Protecting Your Eyes from the Sun: Both the outside and the inside of our eyes can be damaged by the UV radiation of the Sun! Protecting the outside tissues of the eyes must include the use of a wide brim hat (a hat alone can offer up to 50% protection) and, of course, closely fitting sunglasses with proper UV protection.   Do darker sun lenses provide greater UV protection? Lenses do not have to be dark to provide UV protection. In fact, some materials such as polycarbonate lenses have UV protection built in, and the color of the lens just helps filter out the amount of light that is allowed to enter into the eye. Other lens materials such as mineral glass lenses (authentically used in many MOSCOT Sunglasses) also provides UV protection, in addition to scratch resistance, and clear, distortion-free vision.   Do MOSCOT Sunglasses provide UV protection? All MOSCOT Sunglasses provide optimal protection against UV radiation (harmful rays from the sun). Remember that UV radiation exists year-round and that the color of the lens has no impact on UV radiation protection by the lens.   What is the difference between Polarization and UV protection? UV Protection helps shield your eyes from dangerous rays from the sun, while polarized lenses offer the best way to help eliminate annoying glare from the sun. Having ultraviolet protection is important for eye health, while polarization is more of a preference. Polarized lenses are fabricated in a unique way that is specifically designed to reduce glare from intense reflected light. As glare is caused from the sun reflecting off of water, or a solid surface, polarized lenses are particularly beneficial while at the beach or lake, or while participating in outdoor activities such as water sports or fishing.   What is Ultra Violet radiation and why do we need UV protection? UV light, or UV radiation, consists of three categories of “invisible” radiation: UV C, UV B, and UV A. UV C is the highest energy and most damaging form, but thankfully most of it is blocked by the atmosphere. UV B is also partially filtered by the ozone layer, but some gets through—causing sunburn—and does the most damage to our skin around our eyes. The good news is that UV B is blocked by our corneas and does not cause as much damage to the inside of our eyes that UV A does. UV A, is the category that is believed to cause the most problems inside our eyes, such as cataracts (the lens inside our eyes gets cloudy and interferes with vision) and macula degeneration (most critical part of our retina that gets effected and degrades our central vision). Proper UV filtering sunglasses will block UV A light and can help prevent these conditions.   What are the dangers of too much UV radiation exposure to our eyes? Have you ever seen what is commonly referred to as “surfer’s eyes”?  With this condition you will notice a change in the color or thickening of the white part of one’s eyes. This condition, known as a Pterygium (and to lesser extent Pingueculae), can actually affect the cornea and if untreated can eventually impact one’s vision. Also, the sensitive tissues on our eyeballs such as the cornea and conjunctiva can sustain sun damage.   Can I add my prescription to my sunglasses? Yes! You can add prescription lenses to any of our sunglasses! Plus, there are many options to achieve sun protection in your ideal style. Add photochromatic to your prescription lenses and watch your lenses change in color from indoors to out (go from clear to dark) without the need to switch frames. No contacts? No problem. Clip your sun lenses right over your favorite pair of eyeglasses. Our MOSCOT Family Members can assist you along the way. A Father's Day Message

am Jun 14 2020
Dear Fellow Dads, As the 5th Generation of my family’s business, I’ve always wondered what the next generation, the 6th Generation, of our business will look like. How can I pass on the torch the way my father did? How will we carry on this eyewear tradition as a family business? I’m sure my father, and his father, and his father’s father all had these same thoughts somewhere along their journey. I continue to wonder and think about the possibilities of what the next generation and the future of our business holds… About 6 months ago my wife and I were blessed with twin girls! And here I am, today, celebrating my first Father’s Day as a dad of two baby girls in New York City. While we’ve all been struggling the past few months during this pandemic, I’ve had the lucky fortune of spending precious time with my babies. I am so grateful for this time with them, watching them grow and supporting my wife as we quickly became a family of 4! Sometimes we are all able to find our own silver lining during hard times. This Father’s Day, I am profoundly grateful to be a dad and I am excited that my girls represent the prospect of our family’s 6th generation in business. Perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself, but the idea that one day I may have some serious girl power in the office inspires me! On my first Father’s Day I am going to do my best to appreciate and live in the moment. As summer is approaching, we all have our sights on sunnier days ahead and there is no doubt that lookin’ sharp on Father’s Day is key, especially for all those new dads out there. With that said, I’m sharing some of my go-to sunglasses that I’ll be rockin’ this Father’s Day and in the city throughout the summer. To all my dads out there, don’t underestimate the power of a pair of classy shades! Keep it real and Happy Father’s Day. Zack Moscot 5th Generation

We’ve been making prescription glasses since 1915! Build your frames online MOSCOT.COM in five easy steps and hear from 4th Generation, Dr. Harvey Moscot, and 5th Generation & Chief Design Officer, Zack Moscot, along the way! – Dr. Harvey Moscot: “When you think about it, eyeglasses, if you need them, are the first thing you put on in the morning, and the last thing you take off at night. So it’s a really critical element of your day. Having the right pair, that you are comfortable with, that you see well with, I can’t think of anything else more important.” Step One is to Select A Frame. You can add prescription to any of our glasses, optical or sun! With over 100 years of optical expertise, we understand the importance of a proper fitting frame. Not sure which MOSCOT style is for you? There are a few general guidelines to help you find frames that not only look great but fit well too. Be sure to consider size, face shape, bridge fit, and style in selecting the right frame for your face. Don’t be afraid to mix things up! Zack Moscot: “Most people typically take into consideration their personal sense of style and tastes before selecting a pair of frames. Today, we see that picking a pair of glasses is very much a fashion decision, and whether you want your frame to make a statement or disappear on the face, it’s completely up to you!”   Next, choose your lenses! Begin building your lenses based on prescription type. Choose Single Vision (one focus) for distance, reading, or everyday glasses. Choose Progressive Lenses (multi-focal) to combine all of your vision needs into one pair of glasses. These lenses correct near, intermediate, and distance fields of vision in one lens so you don’t have to switch between multiple pairs. Alternatively, you can add simple magnification to create Reading Glasses with no prescription necessary. Lastly, non-prescription lenses offer style and protection with no vision correction. Did Ya Know? There are several upgrades available to add to your complete pair! Want to go indoor to outdoor without switching your frames? Turn your eyeglasses to sunglasses in minutes with Transitional lenses. Do you wear these in front of a computer? Help to eliminate eyestrain while viewing digital devices by adding Blue Light protection with Digital Relief. Want to make your lenses thinner? Select hi-index for the thinnest lens for prescriptions outside of +/-4.00 to ensure a comfortable fit. You can also pop on a fashion tint in 20 unique colorways with MOSCOT Custom Made Tints™ or simply throw on some shade with a Clip-On Sunglass. After that, add your Prescription. During your checkout process, you can add your prescription information. Enter your prescription manually, send it in later (don’t worry, we’ll send you a reminder!), or we can call your doctor! Fabricated in our NYC Lab Every pair of prescription eyewear is carefully verified and quality controlled in our own MOSCOT Lab by our Licensed Opticians and meet a rigorous standard of excellence. From in-house frame design to final quality control testing - every MOSCOT frame is adjusted, cleaned, and inspected in our New York City labs before it is packaged and shipped to you! Dr. Harvey Moscot: “There’s a real complexity to an eyeglass prescription. Different needs require different lenses, and the proper fabrication of them to exact specification is super important to us. We understand how it needs to be interpreted, and how it needs to be made exactly the way it is written.” Enjoy your new frames! Our MOSCOT Family Members can assist you along the way. Questions on lenses? We’ve got answers! If you’ve ordered prescription glasses with us before, we can look it up! Give us a ring: 1.866.MOSCOTS or Email us: support@moscot.com Dr. Harvey Moscot: “’Your vision is our concern.’ That was my grandfather’s guiding principle—that providing vision and doing the right thing for the customer and giving them the right type of lens for their particular visual condition was paramount. We want everyone to put on a pair of MOSCOTs with their new prescription and say ‘Wow! This is the clearest I’ve ever seen!’”

100+ Years of Eyewear — Frames Through the Decades

am Apr 12 2020
With over 100 years and 5 Generations of optical expertise, MOSCOT has been crafting iconic eyewear with each passing decade. From the round metal specsof the ‘20s, to the tinted aviators of the ‘70s, and even providing Blue Light Digital Relief lenses to frames today, MOSCOT continues to create heritage eyewear you can trust. 1920s: The iconic eyewear of the 1920s was predominantly characterized by small round, oval, or octagonal shapes. Round metal frames became popular for both men and women at this time, especially with cable temples for added comfort and support. The NACHUS, inspired by the classic round specs worn by 1st Generation Hyman Moscot in the 1920s, are made from metal with Windsor rim-inspired eye wire, detailed filigree, authentic cable temples, and bone colored nose pads. 1930s: Round frame glasses remained quite popular into the ‘30s, this time showing up in acetate variations. The round, full-vue MILTZEN, was first introduced in the 1930s and is still a family favorite of today. Made from acetate with two adjoining dot rivets on the front and temples, a key hole bridge, and real three barrel hinges, The MILTZEN is a round classic. 1940s: In the 1940s, glasses became more than a medical device, and took new form as a fashion accessory. The iconic LEMTOSH stands the test of time with its iconic design and continues to uphold a legacy of its own. This rounder classic style, first introduced in the mid-20th century, has served as the calling card for generations of intellectuals, artistes, and auteurs. 1950s: Popularized in the 1950s, the cat eye became a staple frame shape in eyewear. The subtle curvature of the frame playfully emphasizes the eyes with a unique touch. A cool cat eye with a nod to the 50s, The SHEITLE isn’t shy. Made from color coordinating column rivets and a kaleidoscope of colorways, you may just throw on your SHEITLE and take on a whole new look! 1960s: Thick geometric shapes such as The KELEV, grew in popularity into the ‘60s. The unique beveling on the frame-front and column rivets on the temples provide structure for the Black, Tortoise, and Light Grey acetate used to boost the look. 1970s: The square aviator with a double-bar bridge became the defining eyewear style of the ‘70s. Aviators, while initially designed for pilots, became quite popular, especially with the addition of gradient fashion tints and shades. The SHTARKER with Big Apple Fade Custom Made Tint™ embodies the funky fashion of the 1970s.   1980s: Oversized frames remained in style in the 1980s and even bolder specs emerged in the form of fashionable shapes and colors. The MEGILLAH, made from acetate with square rivets on the temples, no exposed hardware on the frame front, and a saddle bridge was inspired by the frames MOSCOT Orchard Street Shop Manager, Morty wore back in the day. Available in colorways such as Black, Tortoise, and Grey-Brown Fade, The MEGILLAH is a revamped ‘80s classic. 1990s: The ‘90s saw a shift to smaller, minimalist designs, much like the thinner silhouette of The ARTHUR. This frame is based on the shapes of decades past, but with a slimmed down look, a thinner gauge, and a key hole bridge that’s just a bit more business. Available in neutral colors like Mist/Tortoise, Sage, and Tobacco, The ARTHUR packs the ‘90s punch! 2000s: The turn of the millennium inspired futuristic trends with sleek design—much like the demurely flirty essence of The MANGITO. With its unique lines and curves made from beveling on the frame front, The MANGITO transcends time. 2010s: The next decade has brought in new lens adaptations to existing iconic frame styles with Digital Relief lenses. Digital Relief blue light glasses filter out high energy visible light and help to eliminate glare. These blue light glasses can provide a better experience for anyone viewing a digital screen. Take a walk through time and shop MOSCOT frames through the decades!

SUPPORTING OUR HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY

The MOSCOT optical roots were first planted in America by Great Great Grandfather and family patriarch, Hyman Moscot, who arrived from Eastern Europe via Ellis Island in 1899. Hyman began selling ready-made eyeglasses from a pushcart on Orchard Street on Manhattan's famed Lower East Side. In 1915, MOSCOT’s first Shop opened, and for the past 105 years the MOSCOT Family has become deeply ingrained in the history and evolution of New York City. While now recognized as a global fashion brand, MOSCOT remains, at heart, a neighborhood optical Shop. Working with Cherry Optical Labs, another family-owned independent wholesale optical laboratory, founded by Joe and Lynn Cherry in 1999 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, MOSCOT is focusing on giving back to our emergency medical professionals during this time in a special way. The two, multi-generational, family-owned American companies will provide MOSCOT frames that are fitted with clear lenses that can help to reduce exposure to airborne particles or fluid-borne pathogens from patients. This is also an effort to get healthcare providers solely reliant on their contact lenses into a pair of protective eyeglasses. We received an overwhelming amount of requests and our team is working hard to respond as quickly as we can. We have pledged over $1.5 million worth of eyeglasses (that’s nearly 5,000 pairs!) to front line personnel and could not have done it without your help! Although we have paused on receiving new requests at this time, we are working hard to find different ways to give back to those protecting our communities during this crisis. Please stay tuned, and if you have any questions or concerns, please drop us a line at relief@moscot.com. Thank you, The MOSCOT Family

MOSCOT Ready Readers

am Apr 01 2020
Ready, Set, Read! Ready Readers or “Ready-Made Reading Glasses” provide support for those needing close-range vision correction, without the need for a prescription. Fourth Generation and Doctor of Optometry, Dr. Harvey Moscot, says: “We all fear what happens to most of us after 40 years old when reading up close gets more difficult and our arms get too short...the normal aging process of presbyopia sets in.” As eyes get older, the lenses gradually lose the ability to flex, making focusing on close objects more difficult. This is a natural sign of aging, and although it cannot be prevented, correction can be found with the use of MOSCOT Ready Readers. Ready Readers contain 2 single vision lenses with the same positive spherical power (in other words, magnification) to relieve the symptoms of presbyopia. MOSCOT Ready Readers offer vision correction for reading newsprint or books, fine print, or menus, as well as for engaging in hobbies that require attention to detail at a close range. Ready Readers are perfect for on-the-go. Make sure to schedule a regular eye exam to keep your eyes happy and healthy! Our favorites include The SAJA, The LUCY, and The MARILYN. Did ya know? You can transform any MOSCOT frame into Ready Readers! Simply pick your frame and add to cart to select your reading power.

Q&A with Dr. Harvey Moscot

am Mär 02 2020
Read on for an eyecare Q&A with our own Dr. Harvey Moscot, and click here to schedule an exam at any of our New York City locations! 1. How often should I have a Comprehensive Eye Exam? What about a Contact Lens Exam? In general, we recommend regular Comprehensive Eye Exams. Depending on your health history, prescription status, and/or age, we recommend a Comprehensive Eye Exam every 12 - 24 months. Contact lenses wearers should have a Contact Lens Exam every year. 2. What should I expect in a contact lens fitting? Contact lenses are not one size fit all! Our doctors will measure the curvature of the cornea, or front surface of the eye, to ensure the lens properly fits the curve of your eye. A tear film evaluation will ensure the eyes are adequately hydrated and ensure your eyes are in optimal shape for contact lens wear. 3. Why should you not sleep in contact lenses? What happens to the eye? Sleeping with your contact lenses is never a good idea. Even extended-wear contacts approved for overnight wear come with risk of causing eye infections. Leaving contacts in overnight interferes with the oxygen supply to the cornea. This can result in abnormal corneal changes, serious red eyes, and general irritation under the upper eyelids that result in the inability to continue to wear your contact lenses. 4. Do you recommend wearing Blue Light filtering glasses? Over-exposure to high energy blue visible light from computers and other digital devices can lead to symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, and sleep disruption. Blue Light Filter lenses help to eliminate glare which can provide a better experience for anyone viewing a digital screen. 5. What are the best foods to eat to maintain eye health? Certain nutrients such as zinc, copper, vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and beta carotene may reduce the risk of age-related eye health decline. Nutrient-rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, carrots, nuts and legumes can help to prevent such decline. And don’t forget your Fish Oils for healthy eyelid gland secretion! 6. Why do I need more than one pair of glasses? Just as you wouldn’t go running in high heels or wingtip shoes, the same goes for wearing your progressive lenses on the computer. Different prolonged visual tasks might require a different lens design for optimal comfort. Also, and on another note, just as you switch up your everyday accessories (scarfs, tie, necklace, belt, etc.) why not switch up your eyewear look too? After all, not every day calls for the same look!   Shop All Optical.

Show Your Eyes Some Love!

Your vision and overall eye health are very important to us. The team of MOSCOT eye doctors will not only provide clearer vision but will also check for various silent eye maladies (ex: glaucoma) that can permanently affect your sight. With 105 years of eye care expertise, Dr. Harvey Moscot’s team of doctors will… 1. Discuss any current issues you are having with your eyes or vision. This includes your visual lifestyle; hours on a computer screen, prolonged close work, etc. 2. Assess your current visual function with your existing glasses. 3. Accurately determine your new eyeglass prescription based on your occupational and lifestyle needs. 4. Examine the health of the front of your eye and determine whether you are producing enough tears (dryness), showing any early signs of cataracts, or any other conditions such as allergies and contact lens over-wear (if applicable) that effect the front tissues of the eyes. 5. Examine the back tissue and most critical part of the eye, aka, the retina. Our doctors can assess your overall heath during this portion of the examination and diagnose, in the early stages, conditions such as Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol just from viewing the back of your eye! This can be done with or without a dilation as MOSCOT utilizes the latest Optomap Imaging Technology that captures a wide field of view of your retina without eye drops! 6. Take the pressure inside your eye which can help determine risk of developing Glaucoma. 7. Finally, explain all our findings and navigate the different optical lens options that are best for your individual needs. We will make recommendations that will help to improve comfort and protect as well as preserve your vision! Your vision is our concern! Click here to schedule your exam at any of our New York City locations.
