Inspired by the British Public Health Services "Poor Boy" Spectacles of the 1960s, The ZEV is named for GREAT Grandpa Sol's cousin and neighborhood lawyer, Zeyfer Braunstein (or Zev for short), who wore this clever, dapper frame (British accent included) when he needed to put his best face forward, helping neighbors whose reputations were on the line, get off the hook.

Great Aunt Ruth used to always say, "You are the glick of my heart," to indicate someone or something she loved. Odd? Hyman's son-in-law Hal (aka, his "aidim") was a nice enough cat, but his work ethic was, well...non-existent. So after a brief stint behind the Orchard Street counter, Hyman encouraged Hal to pursue "other opportunities." Hyman felt guilty. Hal was never happier. We named this frame to honor all The AIDIMs out there, and the father-in-laws who've sent them on their way.

A Ratner’s regular, 2nd Generation Sol would often pop over for a bite at his favorite eatery. Thanks to Genevieve—the colorful hostess in colorful glasses—Sol always left the diner with a belly full of blintzes (and a few satisfied GREPS!) ready to take on the afternoon rush. Ezra ran the busiest fruit stand in the Essex Street Market, but that didn't stop his daily visits to GREAT Grandpa Sol to trade crisp Granny Smith apples for the pair of eyeglasses he coveted. It took quite a few bushels for Ezra to pay for these classic, WWII era spectacles, but eventually he took care of his debt, while simultaneously proving that an apple a day does not, in all cases, keep the doctor away.

Aunt Rosie was bright, complimentary, and always finding the silver lining in life's challenges. Her cheerful optimism was so influential, that the family would often remind one another to look at life through Aunt Rosie Colored Glasses. Good ol' Uncle Harold, aka Uncle Hesh, and his best friend, William, never met an adult beverage they didn't like. Heshy called William Velvyl (a moniker earned whilst the two boozy buddies were farshnoshket). Velvyl wore these glasses, and only these glasses, his entire life. Ergo, The VELVYL! Cheers!
