109 Years at MOSCOT

on Sep 09 2024
MOSCOT is 109 and feelin' fine! We're celebrating our birthday with family favorite frames made from 100+ years of eyewear expertise. The LEMTOSH The LEMTOSH stands the test of time with its iconic design and continues to uphold a legacy of its own. This rounder classic has served as the calling card for generations of creative, thoughtful, free-spirited intellectuals, artistes, and auteurs. The MILTZEN The round, full-vue MILTZEN, first introduced in the 1930s, is eponymously named for our Uncle Heshy, who inexplicably everyone called Uncle Miltzen. And it stuck. So there you go, world... The MILTZEN. The DAHVEN Designed by Zack Moscot (5th Generation), this frame may be a more recent bestselling style, but is based on the eye-conic LEMTOSH silhouette. The DAHVEN, crafted from thick block acetate in rich tonal hues, brings good fortune - and good looks - wherever you take it. The NEBB The NEBB is the favorite of Joel Moscot (3rd Generation). It is chunky, rectangular, raw, aggressive, and in your face - just like a real New Yorker (except for the chunky and rectangular part). The ARTHUR Our Union Square Shop Manager Arthur Rodriguez is not only the bassist for our in-house band, but has also been with MOSCOT for 25+ years! That alone deserves the honor of having a frame named after him. Rock on, Art! The ZOLMAN It doesn't get any cooler and more classic than this - the perfectly round ZOLMAN is great Grandpa Sol's frame. Yes, that great Grandpa Sol (2nd Generation). As we said, cool and classic. Fun Fact: Zolman was Sol's name on his birth certificate.

The MOSCOT Size Guide

on May 01 2023
With over 100 years of optical expertise, we know one size does not fit every face. MOSCOT offers multiple sizes so that you can find the proper fit for the optimal optical experience! We breakdown size by the width of the face using the following categories: Narrow, Average, Wide, and Extra Wide. We typically encourage narrow sizes for smaller faces and wide sizes for larger faces, though if it’s your first time purchasing, we recommend sticking to average. Using The LEMTOSH style as an example, we find that most people fall within ‘Average,’ with the most popular size being 46. As depicted on the model images below, the same frame in different sizes can evoke different looks. In this way, we offer different sizes pending individual fit, as well as personal style—if you want an oversized look, consider sizing up. Both models are wearing The LEMTOSH SUN in Blonde in sizes 44, 46, 49, and 52. ALL ABOUT FIT “An important part of fit is determining where your eye sits in the frame—your eyes should be well centered. Eyeglass frames that are too wide will make your eyes appear too close together, while narrow frames will give your eyes a wide set look.” - Harvey Moscot, 4th Generation If you are already wearing glasses, we recommend looking at your current pair as a size reference. Size is determined by the width of one lens in millimeters and is typically engraved in the inside temple of each frame. The size measurements of the frame go beyond just the horizontal eye size (as shown above). While it may be the most discussed dimension, and most beneficial when determining fit, bridge size and temple length are also key factors to consider when selecting a proper fitting frame. Bridge Size is the distance between the lenses and temple length is the distance from the frame front to temple tip, both measured in millimeters. Not only can ill-fitting glasses be frustrating, but they can also cause headaches and eye strain. Here are a few ways to determine if your glasses are the wrong fit or just need an adjustment. After determining that your eyes sit in the center of your frame, move your head up and down and side to side. If the frame slides off your face or falls off, it just needs the proper adjustments by a licensed optician for a more secure fit.  Now, what if the opposite happens? If the temples are pressing into the side of your face and you feel like you must force them on, once again, all that’s needed is an adjustment. Take your glasses to a licensed optician to have the frame fit to your comfort level. Adjustments are a common practice. They are quick, easy and any optician can do them for you. Still have questions? Our frame fit specialists are here to help you get framed!

MOSCOT Mobileyes supports LES Public School Music Education with Immersive Exhibit AN IMMERSIVE ART EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY MOSCOT MOBILEYES AND MUSIC WILL IN COLLABORATION WITH PERRY MARGOULEFF, STEVE ROSENTHAL, AND DESIGNER DANIEL KERSHAW The MOSCOT Mobileyes Foundation has announced a partnership with national music education nonprofit, Music Will, for Punk & Beyond: Legends of the Lower East Side, an immersive art experience celebrating the musicians that rose to fame on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With support from legendary music producers Perry Margouleff and Steve Rosenthal, the exhibition will raise funds for the launch and expansion of Music Will’s music programming in the neighborhood’s public schools. In addition to developing and sponsoring the exhibit, The MOSCOT Mobileyes Foundation has kicked off the initiative with a $26,000 donation to open four music programs in local public schools; this will fund teacher trainings, instrument donations, curricular resources, and scholarships to attend the Music Will Modern Band Summit. Both organizations hope to continue this initiative annually, building lifelong connections between students and music worldwide.  This initiative stemmed from the belief that music brings people together across all divides, a sentiment shared by friends, philanthropists, and musicians, Perry Margouleff, Steve Rosenthal, and Harvey Moscot. With MOSCOT’s historical roots in the Lower East Side, the Punk & Beyond: Legends of the Lower East Side gallery aims to pay tribute to a few impactful musical pioneers and establishments of the neighborhood while raising funds to inspire the next generation of musicians. “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to evolve MOSCOT Mobileyes from one passion of providing eyecare to those in need, to my other great joy in life—music, by providing music education to local public-school kids. I am dedicated to continuing to find ways to give back to the city that has been so good to MOSCOT” shares Dr. Harvey Moscot. MOSCOT Music originated in 2004 at the Company’s Orchard Street Shop, when 4th Generation, Harvey Moscot, grabbed his guitar and started jamming out on a rainy Saturday. Guests lined up, staff members and 5th Generation, Zack Moscot, joined in and since then, MOSCOT has added a music element to its repertoire, by connecting fans worldwide with emerging and established musical artists. "We are so grateful to MOSCOT Mobileyes for their invaluable support of our mission promoting music education in the Lower East Side, and to Perry Margouleff for his unwavering dedication to our cause," says Janice Polizzotto, Music Will Interim CEO. "We are so proud to be part of an exhibit that commemorates the rich musical heritage of this historic neighborhood and celebrates its vibrant diversity."  Designed by Daniel Kershaw, Exhibition Design Manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the immersive experience will feature artifacts from Johnny Thunders, Lou Reed, Norah Jones, David Peel, and more. Free and open to the public, the exhibit will run from April 22nd - July 9th, Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm to 8pm at the Mark Miller Gallery (92 Orchard Street, NY, NY). The gallery space will hold various intimate events throughout the course of its run hosted by donors, including performances, panels, and conversations with Lower East Side legends.   ABOUT MOSCOT MOBILEYES The MOSCOT Mobileyes Foundation is a not-for-profit organization serving underprivileged New Yorkers founded by Dr. Harvey Moscot in 2008. The Mobileyes initiative has shifted from solely providing medical eyecare to supporting the needs of the community as a whole. To make a donation, visit MOSCOT Mobileyes ABOUT MUSIC WILL Music Will is the largest nonprofit music program for schools in the United States. In the last 20 years, they have provided teacher training, curriculum, and instruments to over 6,000 schools across all 50 states - impacting over 1.2 million students to date. The organization's mission is rooted in social justice work, striving to restore and transform music education in schools as districts continue to lose funding for music and arts programs. Comprising rock, hip-hop, pop, R&B, Latin, country, and jazz genres, Music Will's unique curriculum is as diverse as the students they serve. The Spring 2023 Collection MOSCOT Road Trip

on Mar 01 2023
This Spring, we’re taking a Road Trip out of New York City to find creative inspiration. The Spring 2023 Campaign speaks to artistic freedom, originality, and the beauty of the creative journey to make something truly authentic.   The Spring 2023 campaign follows native New York band and admired friends, Andy Suzuki and Kozza Babumba of Andy Suzuki & The Method on an escape from the city in search of adventure, a change of scenery, and inspiration for a new song. "Working with MOSCOT on this campaign has been incredible for us,” says lead singer Andy Suzuki. “This element of creative evolution really hits home when it comes to our musical and personal styles,” he adds. Drummer, Kozza Babumba, continues “early in our career we discovered MOSCOT, and it’s cool because we can see the pictures and videos over the years reflect our style evolution that also coincided with the music changing. So, I think there has been a really interesting lockstep journey between our music and MOSCOT that has been amazing to watch and is reflective of the journey depicted in the campaign.” As the first designer at the helm of the family business, Chief Design Officer and 5th Generation, Zack Moscot was keen to cater to the core MOSCOT community. “This new collection is designed for the creative person, process, and product. We strive to embrace artistry and what it takes to make something original,” he shares. “I want those who have been shopping with us for generations and those who have been fitted for a pair of frames for the very first time to feel represented. Always keeping in mind, the common thread of creativity and artistry woven into our brand’s DNA.” As a result, MOSCOT’s Spring 2023 line combines classic vintage styles with modern construction, welcoming a new class of iconic originals in five new styles, from round, thick and chunky to the elegant details seen in their reinvented “eyebrow” frame design. The full range of the collection was designed with artists in mind who seek more than just a fashion accessory, but also a creative lens. MOSCOT’s rich history allows the brand to see the past in the present, shaping the future. By focusing on more than just the product, but on the process as well, the results are crystal clear. Adjust If You Must: How To Know If Your Eyeglasses Need An Adjustment

on Feb 03 2023
Ordering prescription glasses online is a simple way to get your eyewear delivered straight to your doorstep. Easy as it may be, we understand you may have some lingering questions. How do I pick the right frame? What if the color doesn’t suit me? The most important question: will they fit? All of which are valid concerns.  Not only can ill-fitting glasses be frustrating, but they can also cause headaches and eye strain. Here are a few ways to determine if your new glasses are the wrong fit or just need an adjustment. First, look in the mirror at yourself. This may seem like a given but really look at yourself with the glasses on. Do you like what you see? Are your eyes properly centered?  Is there too much space between your face and the sides of your glasses? An important part of fit is determining where your eye sits in the frame. Your eyes should be well centered in the frame. Eyeglass frames that are too wide will make your eyes appear too close together, while narrow frames will give your eyes a wide-set look. If the frame is right and the color looks great, then you’re off to a good start! Next, move your head up and down and side to side. If the frame slides off your face or falls off, don’t feel like you’ve made the wrong choice. It doesn’t mean the frame isn’t for you, it just needs the proper adjustments by a licensed optician for a more secure fit.  Now, what if the opposite happens? What if you put the glasses on and there’s some resistance? If the temples are pressing into the side of your face and you feel like you have to force them on, once again, all that’s needed is an adjustment. Take your glasses to a licensed optician to have the frame fit to your comfort level. Adjustments are a common practice. They are quick, easy and any optician can do them for you. Buying glasses is definitely not a one size fits all situation (which is why we have many sizes to choose from!), but with the right adjustments, we can make sure you have your perfect pair!  Still have questions? Our frame fit specialists are waiting to help you get framed! Check out Dr. Harvey Moscot discussing proper frame fit.

108 Years at MOSCOT

on Jan 01 2023
MOSCOT is 108 and feeling great! Take a stroll down memory lane as we recap our 100+ years in the biz. 1899, Hyman Moscot, 1st Generation  The MOSCOT Optical roots were first planted in the Lower East Side of Manhattan when Great Great Grandfather and 1st Generation, Hyman Moscot, arrived from Eastern Europe via Ellis Island, in 1899. Hyman, like many immigrants, began selling what he knew best—eyeglasses—from a Pushcart on Orchard Street. 1915, 94 Rivington Street Shop By 1915, having amassed a following of loyal customers, Hyman opened the family’s first retail shop at 94 Rivington Street. 1925, Sol Moscot, 2nd Generation In 1925, Hyman’s son, Sol, at the tender age of only 15, joined the family business and helped take over the reins as 2nd Generation. 1930s, Sol and the Great Depression During the Great Depression in the 1930’s, Sol contributed to the good of the city by providing free eye checks, frames, and adjustments to the New York Community with a pay it forward mentality. It was important to Sol and the entire Moscot family to give back to the Lower East Side community that had welcomed them to the neighborhood several years before.   1934,118 Orchard Street Shop By 1934, MOSCOT was settled at 118 Orchard Street, on the corner of Delancey Street, which would be its home for the next eight decades. 1938, The MOSCOT Finishing Lab MOSCOT’s 100-year (and counting!) expertise in eyewear began right in our very own shops, with the latest equipment of the time. To this day, all lens orders are fabricated in house in our New York City laboratory. 1940s, LEMTOSH Legacy The LEMTOSH stands the test of time with its iconic design and continues to uphold a legacy of its own. This rounder classic style, first introduced in the mid-20th century, has served as the calling card for generations of intellectuals, artistes, and auteurs. 1951, Joel Moscot, 3rd Generation In 1951, Sol’s son, 3rd Generation, Joel, began presiding over the “House of MOSCOT.” Charming, educated, and devoted to his customers, Joel quickly made his mark - overseeing the Shop and conveying the family’s values to his sons. 1970, 118 Orchard Street Shop By the 1970s, MOSCOT expanded their Shop at 118 Orchard Street to include the ground-level space below the retail shop. MOSCOT would continue to occupy the corner space until their next big move in 2013. 1976, Bicentennial Parade The Moscots (Sol, Kenny, and Joel) celebrated America’s 200th Birthday at the Bicentennial Parade in New York City.  1986, Harvey Moscot, 4th Generation In 1986, Joel’s son, 4th Generation, Dr. Harvey Moscot, entered the family business as the head of eyecare, where he was a practicing Doctor of Optometry for over thirty years. Today, Harvey leads MOSCOT into the global future as the current CEO. 1992, Kenny Moscot, 4th Generation Joel’s youngest son, 4th Generation, Kenny, followed suit, joining the business in 1992. He will always be remembered as a beloved family member and essential brand visionary. 2004, MOSCOT Music MOSCOT Music originated at the Orchard Street Shop, when 4th Generation, Harvey, grabbed his guitar and started jamming out on a rainy Saturday. Guests lined up, staff members and 5th Generation, Zack, joined in and since then, MOSCOT has added a music element to its repertoire, by connecting fans worldwide with emerging and established musical artists. 2013, 108 Orchard Street Shop In July 2013, after 77 years, the MOSCOT Orchard Street Shop “crossed Delancey Street,” from 118 Orchard to 108 Orchard when its iconic building was sold. Now, located just down the street, MOSCOT still calls Orchard Street home! 2013, Zack Moscot, 5th Generation In 2013 Harvey’s son, Zack, a formally trained industrial designer, came on board, making him the 5th Generation Moscot to join the family business. He is the current Chief Design Officer for the brand and heads all creative and design for the company. 2015, MOSCOT 100 Year In January, 2015, MOSCOT celebrated its 100 Year Birthday! Hyman would be proud. 2021, 94 Orchard Street Shop After 106 years in biz, MOSCOT moved the “cart” down the block one final time to its new flagship location at 94 Orchard Street. Opening the original Shop in 1915 at 94 Rivington Street, one could call it fate that over a century later, the eyewear purveyor makes a permanent home at 94 Orchard Street, just down the block! 2022, Shops Around the World With over a century of expertise, MOSCOT has successfully opened flagship Shops around the world. Today, MOSCOT is available in specialty retail and optical shops in over 50 countries.

MOSCOT Shop Openings! 2022 brings MOSCOT’s 22nd Shop Worldwide

on Dec 16 2022
MOSCOT has been on the move! The 100+ year old family business adds five new Shops in 2022, with the newest locations in Copenhagen, Zurich, Austin, San Francisco, and Rome Frattina. Come by and say hi to our MOSCOTEERs around the world! MOSCOT Copenhagen Perfectly nestled in Indre By near the iconic Round Tower, the Copenhagen Shop is situated in the historical heart of the city. Surrounded by boats, colorful houses and seafood restaurants, luxurious boutiques and just a few paces from Strøget, a long pedestrian shopping street, MOSCOT Copenhagen seamlessly meshes with the historical, diverse, and quaint Danish capital. MOSCOT Zurich Steeped in authenticity, the brand brings more than 100 years of optical expertise, and a wide collection of iconic and classic eyeglasses and sunglasses to the Swiss. In fact, the brand is very authentic to its roots, and strives to bring its history and DNA into each and every Shop, with the location in Zurich as no exception.  MOSCOT’s iconic style is evident in its interior design: dressed walls with the full range of MOSCOT’s collections, familial elements and tchotchkes, vintage furniture and objects from the family archive, New York-made tin ceilings and a custom built fandelier light fixture that bring a dose of Lower Manhattan to the Swiss city. MOSCOT Austin “Austin was an easy choice for our next Shop location. South Congress is known for novel boutiques and independently owned shops, allowing MOSCOT to feel right at home amongst our neighbors—while bringing with us a dash of NYC DNA,” shares Dr. Harvey Moscot, 4th Generation & CEO. Located at 1206 South Congress Ave in Austin, the 1,000-square-foot Shop fits perfectly in the vibrant and cool South Congress district known for fantastic restaurants, funky vintage shops, chic boutiques, cool bars, and exciting live music. MOSCOT San Francisco MOSCOT is ecstatic to bring its urban sophistication to the Bay Area’s Pacific Heights neighborhood. Taking its spot on Fillmore Street, a dynamic hub with high-end fashion boutiques, cafes, and a storied history of live music venues, MOSCOT’s location helps tell the company’s story from coast to coast. San Francisco’s Fillmore District, once known as the “Harlem of the West” brings MOSCOT’s musical and historical elements to the forefront. Now known as the site of the annual Fillmore Jazz Festival, MOSCOT is thrilled to join the neighborhood in celebrating the electric creatives that fill these streets.  MOSCOT Rome Frattina Located across the Tiber River and the Rome Via Cola di Rienzo Shop, and just a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps, Via Frattina is one of the most famous shopping streets in Rome’s historic center with a more pronounced vocation toward tailoring, silverware and furniture. The new Roman Shop marks another step in MOSCOT’s growth strategy, which in the last 4 years has shown a rapid expansion, defining the Brand’s presence in the American, European and Asian territories with shopping destinations perfectly reflecting Brand’s DNA. Not in any of these cities? Find the your local Shop and stop by for a visit!

Read on to see what they always bring with them on the road.  HM: From new Shop openings, to trade shows, to visiting with our loyal fans around the world, Zack and I are often on the go. The Travel Case makes it easy to bring all my specs, from computer glasses to transitional sunnies, in one packable pouch. As music has been so integral to my life, I make sure to always have a pair of headphones and my trusty MOSCOT guitar picks should the opportunity strike to jam on the road. My other everyday essentials include chapstick and a miniature bespectacled case for ibuprofen. Lastly, I make sure to stash a bottle of my Grandfather, Sol’s, Secret Sauce and a chamois for clean glasses all day long.  ZM: When on the road, I never know where design inspiration will strike, so I make sure to always have a mini composition notebook and micron pen to jot down notes and sketch designs that catch my eye. Much like my father, music is a must, so headphones are key to my packing list. The perfect pocket-sized frame, The LEMTOSH FOLD neatly folds up for an ideal sunglass on the go!
